Applications are invited for a funded three-year PhD studentship starting on 1st October 2013 to investigate the novel design and measurement methodologies of millimetre-wave smart antennas. Millimetre-wave smart antennas using, for example printed reflectarrays, are a key technology for satellite communications, wireless local area networks and radars. At millimetre-wave bands they offer multi-gigabit speeds to complement existing Wi-Fi capabilities and enable new cutting-edge wireless applications. The main objectives of this project include novel designs, implementations and measurement techniques of millimetre-wave smart antennas. It will involve antenna design, EM modelling and simulation, RF/millimetre-wave circuit design, DSP algorithms, antenna measurement methodologies.

Candidates should hold a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Overseas students with equivalent degrees will also be considered. The candidate will preferably have a Master degree with distinction and research backgrounds in one or more of the following areas: antenna design, RF circuit design, RF test and measurement, microwave materials, antenna measurement, and electromagnetics.

Project Summary:
Teesside University, the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) of the University of Cambridge and the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) are creating a novel collaboration to research and develop Resource Efficient Manufacturing.
Under the supervision of Dr Graham Hillier, the Centre’s Director, the successful applicant will:
  • carry out research into the development and application of novel manufacturing processes that reduce resource use while improving the flexibility, efficiency and quality of the products being produced;
  • work with the partners to understand existing manufacturing routes for selected products and look at the development of new more resource efficient processes that replace them.

The New 2010 Merit Scholarship Programme for High Technology (MSP)

1. Introduction
The Programme was launched in 1413H (1992), named The IDB Merit Scholarship Programme for High Technology' (MSP).

2. Objective and Scope
The objective of the programme is to develop technically qualified human
resources in the IDB member countries by providing scholarships to promising and outstanding scholars and researchers to undertake advanced studies and research in the fields of applied science and technology needed for the development of the member countries.

The Programme offers scholarships for study and research at two levels: (i)
3-year Ph.D. study/ research, and (ii) 6-12 months of Post-Doctoral research.

3. Concept

The concept is to assist the needs of the IDB member countries and their
institutions in developing high quality and hi-tech human resources in science
and technology areas that they are lacking but crucial for their development.

4. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must meet the following basic
criteria:
  • Age not over (a) 35 years for Ph.D. study, and (b) 40 years for Post-Doctoral research;
  • Attached to a research/academic/development institution in science andtechnology in their respective country;
  • Must possess the required academic background in the related field of their proposed study/research and have some professional/research experience in the respective field;
  • Demonstrate that the research proposal has scientific and technological relevance with the objective of meeting the priority development needs of the country;
  • Have good command of the language of the institution of study and the ability to conduct scientific work in it.

Curtin Canning College Science International Students Bursary 2011, Australia

The Curtin Canning College Science International Bursary is available to international students enrolling at Curtin University in 2011 who have demonstrated high-level academic achievement in their studies at Canning College, and obtained an ATAR (TER) of at least 96 or equivalent in 2010.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and choosing an eligible Undergraduate Science degree at Curtin as 1st preference through TISC.

PhD Scholarships in Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies

NEW PhD Scholarships 2010, The Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies investigates the plurality, changeability, and global connectedness of Muslim cultures and societies. The area of study includes Muslim societies in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, as well as Muslim communities in Europe and North America.The Graduate School examines, in a systematic and comparative way, concepts, practices, and institutions variously understood as Islamic. Special attention is given to relations between Muslims and non-Muslims, as well as forms of inter- and intra-cultural communication from the NEW PhD Scholarships 2010.
In close cooperation with its partner institutions in Germany and abroad, the Graduate School offers doctoral candidates a broad educational programme of exceptional quality coupled with intensive mentoring for individual dissertation projects, training that will qualify graduates to hold leading positions in academia, the media, and politics.

The Graduate School’s  three-year doctoral programme begins in October. Fifteen doctoral students are admitted annually, ten of whom are awarded scholarships provided by the Graduate School.

A Rio Tinto studentship is being offered to an excellent student in Chemical Engineering, Minerals Processing or related disciplines. 

The studentship will cover all student fees, and also offers a tax-free stipend of approximately �15,590 per annum for the period 2010/2011. 

Applications will be considered from both local and overseas students.

Heap leaching is a process for extracting metals from ores. It is rapidly increasing in its usage due to lower operating and capital costs compared to more conventional extraction methods. Understanding the fluid flow and mass transport processes occurring within the heap is essential to improving its design and operation.

This project will be predominantly experimental and will involve the use of a variety of techniques to investigate fluid flow within heaps at both the laboratory and pilot scale. 

The candidate should have a good understanding of fluid dynamics and desirably some knowledge or experience of minerals processing.
